Breville Barista Express (BES870): cleaning, flushing, and descaling

How to keep the Barista Express healthy: daily wand hygiene, the cleaning cycle, and descaling — checked against Breville's own instruction book.

The Barista Express is a thermoblock-style machine with a 3-way valve, so most of its maintenance is routine hygiene rather than surgery.

Daily and weekly

  • Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately after every milk drink — dried milk inside the wand is the single most common cause of stiff steam performance.
  • Knock out the puck and rinse the 54 mm portafilter and basket after every session. Periodically soak the basket and the shower screen area per the manual's cleaning section.
  • Empty and rinse the drip tray before it overflows into the base.

The cleaning cycle

Breville designed a dedicated cleaning cycle into the machine (detailed step-by-step in the instruction book, including the insert and cleaning tablet). Run it when the machine calls for it rather than guessing — it cleans the brew path with far less effort than a full teardown.

Descaling

When the descale alert appears, follow the descaling procedure in the instruction book with a descaling solution, then flush thoroughly with fresh water before brewing again. Breville sells its own descaler; any espresso-appropriate descaler that the manual permits works — follow the manual's dilution, not the bottle's.

Water

Scale is the enemy of every thermoblock machine. Starting with soft (but not distilled-only) water delays descaling substantially. See our espresso machine water guide for the reasoning.

The full procedure, including indicator meanings and the manufacturer's recommended intervals, is in the official instruction book linked in the Manuals tab of the Barista Express page.

Equipment in this guide

Safety: coffee equipment involves electricity, hot water, steam under pressure, and cleaning chemicals. Always unplug, cool down, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This guide is informational and is not a substitute for the official manual or qualified service.
