Baratza burr holder care: adjust while grinding, and other manufacturer guidance
Baratza's own support responses document the two habits that protect conical burr holders — plus what the company says about shims, hoppers, and repairs.
Several Baratza conical grinders (Encore, Encore ESP, Virtuoso+) use a plastic burr holder under the outer ring burr, and Baratza's support team has publicly addressed its number-one failure mode: holders cracking when the grind is adjusted with coffee compacted between the burrs.
The manufacturer's own advice
Responding to owner reports on Baratza's own product pages, Baratza Support repeatedly gives the same guidance: make grind adjustments — especially to finer settings — while the grinder is running, so beans feed through instead of compacting between the burrs, which is what stresses and cracks the holder over time. Baratza's responses also attribute some holder breakage to dense foreign material passing through the burrs, and recommend contacting their support team for replacement parts.
What this means for your routine
- Run the grinder when you turn the ring finer — never force a stationary, bean-jammed adjustment.
- Keep the burrs clean per the instruction manual; on the ESP, the quick-release M2 burr makes this a tool-free job.
- On the Sette family, the removable adjustment ring and included shims exist partly for this: shims relocate the grind range instead of forcing the mechanism past its travel.
- Hopper tabs are the other reported weak point (Sette owners have reported hopper tabs breaking, rendering the interlocked grinder inoperable) — Baratza has supplied replacement hoppers, including single-dose options, in documented support responses.
Repairs, not replacements
Baratza's published position is that its grinders are designed for around 10 years of home use, with parts, service, and DIY support available — cracked holders and worn hoppers are cheap, documented repairs, not reasons to discard the machine.
